About Our Firm

Michael J. Howell has been serving Beaufort County residents since 1978.

The Law Office of Michael J. Howell, P.A. had its origins in 1986 with the firm of Michael J. Howell, Attorney-at-Law, which itself was an off-shoot of a law firm known as Lyman & Howell, P.A.

Lyman & Howell, P.A, was started in 1983 when Michael J. Howell joined the firm after being a Trust Officer with the Bank of Beaufort Trust Department from 1978-1983.  The year 1978 is when Michael came to Hilton Head Island from his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina.

The Bank of Beaufort merged with First National Bank in 1983, which later merged with South Carolina National Bank and is now Wachovia, two mergers later.

From 1989 until 1992, Michael J. Howell was with Palmer, Brooks, Bowen & Howell, P.A. and Palmer, Brooks & Howell, P.A.

Michael reopened the firm of Michael J. Howell, Attorney-at-Law in 1992 in the Executive Center.  The Executive Center is at 1 Corpus Christi Place, which is just off of New Orleans Road.  New Orleans Road goes from William Hilton Parkway to Pope Avenue, avoiding the Sea Pines Circle.  The Executive Center office complex, itself, is visible from the Sea Pines Circle; although, not accessible from it.

Although in a different unit, the firm has been in the Executive Center ever since 1992.  In the year 2000, the firm became known by it current name of The Law Office of Michael J. Howell, P.A.

Margaret Rhea "Ray" Howell joined the firm in 2009 as an associate.  She is the daughter of Mary Rhea Howell and Michael J. Howell.

Mary Rhea  Howell is also employed by the firm and has been working with Michael on and off since 1986.  Mary has known Michael since 1971 and married him in 1974.  She also typed all of Michael's papers when he was in college and also law school.  Mary is currently in charge of financial record keeping and will often greet you when you visit the firm.  Mary is originally from Georgetown, South Carolina.

Tonya M. Glynn is our Paralegal who has been working for the firm since 2000.  She has a paralegal certificate from Midlands Technical College and is also a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a bachelor's degree in general studies.  She has her certified financial planning certificate from Florida State University.  Before joining the firm, she worked for the South Carolina Treasurer's Office at the Capitol Complex in Columbia.  She is primarily responsible for probate administration and also processes Wills, Trusts and other estate planing documents.  She is a Beaufort County native and is married to Tommy Glynn of Lady's Island, SC, who is also a native.

Melinda K. Herman is our Legal Assistant who began working for the firm in April of 1996.  She holds an Associate in Applied Science Degree with a major in Legal Assisting.  Melinda is married with two young children.  After the birth of her twins in July of 2003, she took five years off, then rejoined the firm in August of 2008, when her children became Kindergartners.  Melinda works on probate matters, processes Wills, Trusts, Durable General Powers of Attorney, Health Care Powers of Attorney, and other estate planning documents.  She also handles our monthly billing, our website, and much of our marketing efforts.
